Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio and film. Tradition Eleven reminds us that GreySheet is for those who want it, not for those who need it. We do not advertise or attempt to convince or persuade people to attend GreySheet meetings. We only announce their availability and make them as accessible as possible.
Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities. Tradition Twelve is perhaps one of the most important Traditions to remember when announcing GreySheet meetings and otherwise carrying the message. Whenever we deal with the media, we must also emphasize to them that our faces and last names cannot be used in conjunction with any GreySheet related announcements. Whenever we speak to groups, such as medical professionals, we try to serve as the messenger, not the message. We emphasize the program rather than our personal opinions.
Using Anonymous Email Accounts
Our Twelfth Tradition reminds us that anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions. As the official GSA website, greysheet.org has a responsibility to protect the anonymity of GSA members. (We also have a legal obligation to protect their privacy.)
The GSAWS Website Committee has adopted AA’s Internet guidelines with regard to showing personally identifiable email addresses and phone numbers on the public parts of the greysheet.org website. (Password-protected areas like the GSA phone list will not be affected.)
We can’t remove all contact information from the website without defeating our primary purpose, but some members have email addresses that reveal their last name or the name of their employer’s business. Those email addresses may well be associated with other identifiable information, such as their profile photos on social media accounts.
Therefore, we recommend GSA members create anonymous email accounts or email aliases for use when doing GSA service or discussing recovery online. In the future, we will require all listings on greysheet.org to use anonymous email addresses.
